Mt Washington Auto Road Announces Solar Eclipse Viewing April 8th

Watch the Total Solar Eclipse from 4,000′!

A celestial adventure.

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will pass over northern New Hampshire.

To commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime celestial occurrence, we will drive six guided Stage Coach tours half way up the Mt. Washington Auto Road to provide passengers with the chance to experience 99.2% eclipse totality from 4,000′! New and returning visitors alike will enjoy this extra special elevated experience.

Your adventure begins at our main base lodge in one of our Stage Coach vans. While on the mountain, you may transition to a four-wheeled drive van with the added traction of tire chains depending on road conditions. Along the way, your driver will teach you about the solar eclipse as well as flora and fauna, history, and memories made in their time at the Mt. Washington Auto Road. Your tour continues up the mountain, to approximately 4,000 feet. Upon arrival to the former Halfway House site, passengers are invited to set up camp chairs and take in the vistas all around as the moon starts it’s path in front of the sun. This tour does not go to the summit.

Please remember to dress accordingly. Wear layers and rugged shoes or boots. The weather on Mt. Washington is world famous and changes rapidly, particularly this time of year. Check the MWOBs Higher Summits Forecast closer to the date to help prepare for the conditions.
