Skating Club Hosts Open House Sunday, Jan. 6

Conway, NH — Mount Washington Valley Skating Club will host an Open House from 4:30-6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6 at the Ham Arena, 87 West Main Street in Conway, NH. Admission, skate rentals and mini-lessons and prizes will be free of charge this day, courtesy of the Ham Arena and Mount Washington Skating Club.

This event is for anyone who enjoys skating or wants to learn how to skate or advance in the sport, said Monica Nicoll, skating director of Mount Washington Skating Club. “Those who attend can take time to enjoy some free skate time as well as meet some of the coaches who offer skating lessons in learn to skate, basic level skating, learn to skate for hockey and freestyle figure skating. Attendees will also be able to gather information about skating competition, exhibition, volunteer and leadership opportunities and pre-register for winter and spring classes.”

Winter skating lessons for children and adults start January 13. Sunday classes will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. with the first hour for free skate levels and above. Tuesday lessons will be from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Interested skaters are strongly encouraged to pre-register at Open House.

All lessons are offered under the direction of the club’s skating director, Monica Nicoll. A competitive figure skater competing at national levels in Canada and West Germany, Monica attained ISU Gold Test in figures and free skating, spent a year with Holiday on Ice, European Division and attained coaching ranks in Canada and the US. She coaches children and adults at all levels of skating.

Allyn Roberts, recently joined the club as a professional coach. Allyn began her figure skating career at the age of 8 at the North Shore Skating Club in Massachusetts. At 17, she was recruited by Disney on Ice to perform the role of the Evil Queen in the world tour of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. After touring the world as a professional figure skater for 3 years, she began her coaching career and has instructed at all levels of the USFSA and ISI programs across all age ranges.

Mount Washington Valley Skating Club is a member club of the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) organized to provide skating instruction and to promote participation in the sport of skating. In addition to the tremendous fitness and muscle development that comes from figure skating, USFSA reports that students in its programs develop self-confidence, self-discipline and self-reliance through mastery of skating skills.
