White Mountain National Forest Centennial Fire
Gorham, NH May 10, 2022 — White Mountain National Forest fire personnel along with mutual aid partners are continuing to work on the Centennial Fire located west of Lead Mine State Forest. The smoke was initially reported to White Mountain National Forest on Monday morning and is currently estimated to be approximately 45 acres in size.
Due to forecasted low relative humidity, warmer than normal temperatures, and gusty winds, growth potential exists. The fire is burning in steep, mountainous terrain and has burned across a portion of the Appalachian Trail. The Appalachian Trail Corridor is closed to the junction from the Lead Mine State Forest to the Junction of the Centennial Trail, and the Mahoosuc Trail.
This incident has progressed outside of the White Mountain National Forest and is being managed under Unified Command with USFS and State of NH Forest and Lands personnel. The US Forest Service is grateful to the local fire departments, EMS personnel and the state of Maine for their support during the initial response. There are no major threats to life or property at this time.
A person of interest has been identified and interviewed by USFS law enforcement personnel. While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, it may have been due to a warming fire that accidently escaped.
The potential for increased wildfire activity remains high, and the public is reminded to use caution.
For public safety, the Forest continues to advise that people stay away from the area until the fire is considered controlled. More information will be released as it becomes available.
