The trip will involve light to moderate snowshoeing and provide excellent opportunities to observe tracks of many of New Hampshire’s wildlife and perhaps a peek at some northern birds, such as the boreal chickadee or black-backed woodpecker. Participants should dress for the weather and bring a snack and beverage. Bring your own snowshoes or rent ours.

Elizabeth Macalaster: WAR PIGEONS

Thursday, March 2, 7:00 PM

For more than seven decades, homing pigeons provided the U.S. military with its fastest and most reliable means of communication. Originally bred for racing in the early 1800s, homing pigeons were later trained by pigeoneers and served the United States for almost 75 years, through four wars on four continents. This book is the first complete account of the remarkable service that homing pigeons provided for the American armed forces. Join author Elizabeth Macalaster for a discussion of these extraordinary birds and the research that went into writing this book.
