Memorial Weekend in the White Mountain National Forest

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of the summer season and you may be planning to visit the White Mountain National Forest. As you make your holiday weekend plans for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend White Mountain National Forest officials are reminding visitors to be prepared for a variety of spring conditions. “We want to welcome visitors to get outside and enjoy their National Forest,” said Derek Ibarguen, White Mountain National Forest Supervisor. “We also want people to plan ahead and recreate safely.”
Whether you are planning a camping trip, a hike, or a scenic drive, check weather conditions for the area you are planning to visit. Some higher elevation areas still have snow. Spring melt-off, heavy rainfall, or slower seasonal changes can cause stream crossings to be high. Always be responsible and assess the hazards and risks before entering any section of water and remember at this time of year the water is still very cold.
Most campgrounds are open for the summer. Remember, these campgrounds are in forested environments, and you may attract bears if you have unprotected food in your site. Be sure to properly store all food, including drink containers, condiments like ketchup and mustard, empty food wrappers, and even toothpaste. Feeding bears, intentional or unintentional is prohibited!
Campfires should never be larger than necessary for cooking, and never left unattended. Follow these steps to properly extinguish your campfire: drown, stir, drown, feel. If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.
