2019 Mt. Washington Auto Road Spring Clearing

Pinkham Notch, NH— Following a spectacular winter in the White Mountains, the road crew at the Mt. Washington Auto Road has been busy clearing the historic mountain road in preparation for its 2019 summer season. The spring road clearing is an annual ritual, and with snowpacks reaching 20-plus feet in some areas, the job can take a month or more to complete.

Last week the crew finished clearing the famous Cragway section, and pushed up onto the sixth mile of road. From this point onward, Mother Nature will be the driving force to remove the remaining snow, with the crew managing runoff and doing road repairs as they become necessary.

Things are on schedule for the Mt. Washington Auto Road to open for Memorial Day weekend, and possibly a week earlier if Mother Nature does her part. Those details will be posted on our website (www.MtWashingtonAutoRoad.com), but in the meantime we wanted to provide you with images from the past month’s work on America’s oldest man-made attraction.
