White Mountain National Forest Artist in Residence Presentation Offered in Campton, NH

CAMPTON, NH, June 19, 2017 – All those interested in the forest and its sounds – and in the idea of music in nature – are invited to attend an informal presentation by Steve Wilkes, this year’s White Mountain National Forest Artist in Residence. The talk will be held on Thursday, July 27, at 6:30 p.m. at White Mountain NF Headquarters, 71 White Mountain Drive, Campton, NH. There is no charge to attend.

The presentation by Wilkes, a professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston, will include an overview of his previous sound mapping work on Cape Cod, his artistic vision and philosophy, and his plans for his White Mountain NF residency, which continues through August 12.

During the residency, Wilkes will be recording sounds around the Forest and populating a map with these recordings. The map will be incorporated into the residency website at heartheforest.org. The site was launched July 18, in celebration of World Listening Day.

“Hear The Forest will document the process of building this aural map – essentially, an audio time capsule – of the Forest,” Wilkes says. “Our hope is to make this a sustainable effort by putting in place the means for the public — residents and visitors of all ages, hikers and foresters, everyone interested and invested in this incredible natural resource – to continue the work in future years.”

All are welcome to attend! There will be time to ask questions and learn how to become involved in the aural mapping project, including offering suggestions for sounds to be recorded. Wilkes will offer several additional public programs over the next several weeks.

“I hope through this project to be able to express and communicate to others my profound sense of inspiration – and to help everyone slow down a bit, and really listen,” Wilkes notes.

The Artist in Residence program is a partnership between the White Mountain National Forest, the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire, and Friends of Mead Base Conservation Center in Sandwich.
