Lost River Gorge Opening for the 2017 Season

NORTH WOODSTOCK, NH – It’s time to experience one of New Hampshire’s most scenic natural wonders when Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves opens May 5th for the 2017 season. This is the 165th season for this popular natural attraction, which was discovered when two young brothers on a fishing trip first encountered the moss-covered caves and hidden river.

“The melting snow on the mountains has the river running especially high this Spring,” said Lost River Manager Kate Wetherell. “We expect pop-up waterfalls along the trails, and leftover snow and ice in some of the caves. We’ve done our best to shovel off the boardwalks, as they snow was up over the railings until a few days ago. It was the first time in quite a while we’ve had to shovel off the boardwalk to be ready for opening day.”

Lost River, which tumbles under and over rocks and boulder caves as it flows down from Kinsman Notch, has been an attraction since its discovery in 1852. Recent additions to the property include an “Out of the Gorge” expansion, with a forest adventure trail, a rustic treehouse, birdcage overlook, bear carvings, and suspension bridge that spans the upper gorge. The attraction will elevate the visitor experience by unveiling another new feature in early Summer.

“Visitors will be able to climb into our giant bird nest,” said Wetherell, “to look out across a forest and valley that stretches as far as the eye can see.” The giant bird nest viewing platform will be located close to the main grounds and is one of many additions planned for the popular attraction.

The May 5 opening also marks the start of special days and events at Lost River Gorge. On Mother’s Day, Sunday May 14, every Mom receives the gift of free admission with the purchase of a child’s ticket, and Dads are offered the same special treatment on Father’s Day, Sunday June 18. In partnership with Squam Lakes Natural Science Center, live animal presentations with a naturalist will be offered May 13, June 21, July 12, August 23, and September 9. An admission ticket is required for these presentations.

The popular Evening Lantern Tours begin Memorial Day weekend, and are available throughout the season. Visit LostRiverGorge.com for detailed information and complete schedule. Reservations are required, and these guided tours typically book up in advance.

Lost River will be open from 9 am to 5 pm (last ticket sold 4 pm) through June 30. Summer hours – 9 am to 6 pm (last ticket sold at 5 pm) – will run July and August. Hours of operation then return to 9 am to 5 pm (last ticket sold 4 pm) through closing day on October 15. s.gif
