White Mountain National Forest Releases 2018 Year in Review

Campton, NH—March 8, 2019— The White Mountain National Forest has released its 2018 Year in Review, showcasing forest successes, partnerships, and technological advances across New Hampshire and Maine. The accomplishment report demonstrates how the White Mountain National Forest worked towards goals outlined in the USDA Forest Service Strategic Plan and continues to meet the mission of the agency, “to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.”

In 2018 over 722 acres were treated with the objective of sustaining healthy forests. This included over 16 million board feet of timber being sold from National Forest land. The Forest also added nearly 800 acres to its boundary by securing a new tract of land along the Upper Ammonoosuc River that will provide public access to popular hiking trails. Major investments in infrastructure continue to be a theme of work on the White Mountain National Forest with over 100 miles of road being maintained to prevent erosion and provide critical public access.

The Year in Review highlights that user fees and volunteers continue to provide critical support for improving recreation opportunities on the Forest. Nearly 31,000 volunteer hours were captured across various projects and $200,000 of user fees were invested in constructing new safety railings at Sabbaday Falls.

This year the White Mountain National Forest will continue to focus on managing for a healthy and sustainable forest. Partnerships and public engagement will be critical to accomplishing many of the goals of the Forest.
