The Butterflies of the White Mountains of New Hampshire Currently on Display at Tin Mountain through mid-October

Currently on display at Tin Mountain Conservation Center are the original illustrations used in The Butterflies. The Butterflies of the White Mountains of New Hampshire was published by the Audubon Society of NH in 2003, and is a beautiful coffee table-field guide hybrid. The illustrations for the nearly forty species featured include both photographs and sketches. The book describes not just the physical characteristics of each species, but also covers range, behavior, and ecological importance, including larval host. There is also a strong focus on habitat, particularly Jefferson’s Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge and the alpine zone.

The Butterflies is authored by Warren J. Kiel, who is generally acknowledged as the local expert on lepidoptera of Northern New Hampshire, especially with White Mountain region. Warren lives in Whitefield where he works as a fine furniture craftsman.

The book’s artwork is all done by Lois De Luca, a graduate of Syracuse University School of Fine Arts. Lois studies drawing with Hans Hofmann, woodcuts with Antonio Frasconi, and etching with Stanley Hayter.

The artwork will be on display through mid-October. A limited number of signed copies of the book are available for purchase.
