Tamworth Sled Dog Race to run March 2-3

The annual Tamworth Sled Dog Race will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 2 and 3.  The race will run on the scenic expanse of Chocorua Lake and its surrounding trails, with Mt. Chocorua as a backdrop.  First held in 1937, this race is considered one of the longest-running sprint races in the world.  A series of races will be held each day from 9 am to 3 pm.  Access to the start/finish area is from Route 16 adjacent to the lake.  Parking will be off the northbound lane.

Sponsored by the Tamworth Outing Club in cooperation with the New England Sled Dog Club, this two-day event features dog teams that vary according to class, from one-dog juniors to 14-dog professionals, as well as skijoring.  The biggest teams will compete in the Pinetree Power Classic, starting both days at noon, running an 11-mile course on logging roads and snowmobile trails.

The drivers and dog teams will be arriving from New York, Canada, and throughout New England to compete on these challenging trails.  Spectators who view this popular and exciting event are also encouraged to enjoy the local skiing and amenities in Tamworth.

Admission is free for spectators, who are welcome to watch the teams, talk to drivers, and see the action.  Sled Dog Race buttons will be for sale for a $2 donation. The proceeds from the sale of food, hot beverages and race memorabilia at the race concession trailer will benefit the Tamworth Outing Club’s many youth programs.
