Campton, NH – October 11, 2019 The White Mountain National Forest, Pemigewasset Ranger District is hosting Smokey Bear’s 75th Birthday Traveling Art Exhibit from October 10 – 17th at Forest Headquarters, 71 White Mountain Drive, Campton, NH. The public is invited to visit Monday thru Friday between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm.

On October 15th between 3:00 pm and 5:00 everyone is invited to join us for an Open House at the Forest Headquarters to help us celebrate Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday! In addition to the Art Exhibit there will be activities for children and historical firefighting equipment on display, and of course a birthday party for Smokey Bear with cake!

The White Mountain NF has been celebrating Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday throughout the year and is proud to end the celebration with this very special art exhibit. See 16 prints by artist Rudolph Wendelin. In 1944, Wendelin, a USDA Forest Service employee, became the official artist of Smokey Bear. The prints span the Wendelin years from 1979 (“Smokey’s Fan Mail”) to 1996 (“High Five for Fire Protection”).

Smokey Bear’s modern-day message – “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires” – is as important to fire safety now as his first message was back in 1944 when the USDA Forest Service and the Ad Council inaugurated the first-of-its-kind public service outreach.
