Rumney Rocks 85 acres added to the White Mountain National Forest

Campton, NH – March 4, 2020– The White Mountain National Forest joined the Rumney Climbers Association (RCA) today in adding 85 acres to the White Mountain National Forest. A multi group collaboration, that opens more lands for public recreational opportunities. This effort brought to fruition a vision which turned into a wonderful collaborative success story. The RCA had the vison and idea, along with the expertise and technical and financial support from The Access Fund and last but not least the amazing support and donations from all of the climbing and local communities.

The Rumney Climbers Association was able to take their vision and with a lot of work, help and resolve to make that vision a reality. The climbing community raised more than $100,000 toward the conservation project, and in 2017 RCA purchased the 85-acre parcel, using a loan from Access Fund’s Climbing Conservation Loan Program (CCLP) to cover the gap and jump-start stewardship improvements. Over the following three years, RCA constructed a new parking lot and trail system.

The property consists of 85 +- acres of steep ledges and other important habitats. The property comes with a connector link trail to the ledges/other trails and parking lot that was all installed by Rumney Climbers Association prior to conveying to the U.S. Forest Service. This conservation effort opened more than 40 new climbing routes, encouraging climbers to disperse and explore, lightening the impact on Rumney’s historically popular walls.

The deed was recorded in Grafton County Registry of Deeds on February 21, 2020.The funding for this purchase was provided by individual donations, The Access Fund and the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) Recreation Access dollars. A great example of the people coming together and working with the U.S. Forest Service towards a common goal.

If you are planning to go climbing in the White Mountain National Forest, please take the time to research the area you plan to climb, always let someone know where you plan to climb, take the needed equipment and safety gear, climb respectfully and know your limits. Climb safe, climb smart.
