HUNDREDS OF MT WASHINGTON VALLEY RESIDENTS RAISED $70,000 TO FIGHT BREAST CANCER

American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk Empowers Community To Take Action

More than 300 residents joined together at the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® 3 mile walk on Sunday, October 20th to help the Society do the most for people with breast cancer today to end the disease tomorrow. This noncompetitive event united the entire community to honor breast cancer survivors, educate people about how to reduce their breast cancer risk or find the disease early and raise funds to end breast cancer. The event and the dollars raised from it help the Society provide free resources and support to the one in two women newly diagnosed with breast cancer who turn to the Society for help and support. Dollars raised also fund groundbreaking research to find, prevent, treat and cure breast cancer, as well as help the Society ensure access to mammograms for women who need them.

Four Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks were held across New Hampshire on Sunday, drawing together thousands of people in the fight against breast cancer raising over $700,000 collectively.

Walkers in North Conway enjoyed a pink out station, Avon tent, and survivor recognition. The Jeannie Limmer Dancers performed, and Home Depot hosted a craft station for children. Participants took an inspirational, uplifting walk through the North Conway Village and Whitaker Woods.

The top fundraising team was Stonehurst Manor, raising $21,568. Second highest team was Team Kathleen at $2,743, and the third highest fundraising team was team Echo’s Breast Friends, raising $2,682. The highest individual fundraiser on a team was Heidi Shellmer of team Stonehurst Manor raising $20,647. The highest fundraiser among the individual walkers was Rebecca Connors raising $10,455. Rebecca Connors and Heidi Shellmer reached Pacesetter status raising over $2,500 each. More than 20 teams and 30 individual walkers participated. The teams represented area businesses, clubs, and organizations as well as friends and families.

Making Strides participants can be proud that we’ve seen a 39% drop in breast cancer death rates since 1989, but we still have much more to do. Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women. According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts & Figures 2019, more than 268,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 41,760 will die from the diseasethis year.

Since 1993, 15 million Making Strides supporters have raised more than $935 million nationwide. This is the 2nd year Making Strides partnered with Avon as the National Presenting Sponsor.
