Winter Skills 101

This program is designed for 3 season hikers interested in getting out in winter and gaining skills to be able to do this on their own. Weekend includes both indoor and outdoor sessions. Program Highlights:
•Participants will learn how to prepare for winter hikes
•Route planning (terrain considerations, weather considerations, timing)
•What to carry (10 essentials plus winter considerations and tips for staying warm)
•What to wear (appropriate clothing, layering)
•Types of gear (snowshoes, traction, poles)
•Hypothermia and Frostbite prevention
•Participants will learn basic use of snowshoes, poles, and traction
•Participants will learn basic map reading and compass use
•Participants will learn about snow shelters
•Participants will learn basic winter ecology and wildlife tracking along the way during hikes
