There’s A Black Fly In My Eye 10-Mile Trail Race & Relay

Runners were blessed with great weather last weekend for New Hampshire’s leading trail running event at Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center, coursing it’s way along the base of Mount Washington on both single-track and carriage roads. The black flies were in attendance as well, adding some extra motivation for the runners. The course consisted of three distinct loops within the Great Glen trail system, all starting and finishing at the base lodge, with the final loop including a crossing of the Peabody River. Racers had the option of tackling the entire 10-mile course solo or as a team of three, or opting for a 3-mile race on the first loop. Congratulations go out to all the runners, as well as a heartfelt “thank you” for making this one of the best trail races in New England.

Northeast Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race

On Saturday, June 15, the Mt. Washington Auto Road will host the state’s most historic and challenging running race—the Northeast Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race. 2019 marks the 59th running of the race on the legendary Auto Road, which has been sponsored annually by Northeast Delta Dental since 2001. The steep, all-uphill, 7.6-mile course climbs over 4,650 vertical feet, with a maximum grade of 22%. It’s a test for all of the 1,300-plus racers, whether they’re Olympians or weekend warriors.

The strong partnership between Northeast Delta Dental and the Mt. Washington Auto Road, bolstered by the Auto Road’s ongoing commitment to local communities, has resulted in annual donations totaling over $125,000 to Coos County Family Health Services (CCFHS). Ken Gordon, CCFHS’s Chief Executive Officer, commented on the joint effort: “The Mt. Washington Auto Road and Northeast Delta Dental have been remarkable partners. Their support has helped us to purchase new equipment for our dental clinic, and allowed us to establish a small program to help with the cost of providing dentures. Their support has been instrumental to our work, and has made a real difference in the lives of many local residents.”

Spectators are encouraged to come cheer on the runners from the start/base area, and can walk up the Auto Road prior to the start to view the racers on course. A limited number of on-mountain spectator tickets will also be sold on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 7:00 AM in the base lodge. Those spectators will be transported up the Auto Road at 8:00 AM in designated spectator vans. The Auto Road will re-open for regular traffic at approximately 1:30 PM after the conclusion of the race.
